New Energy Award 2000

Director-General of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Prize
Application Category

Tomamae Wind Villa Wind Farm
Winner
Dream-up Tomamae Co., Ltd.
Electric Power Development Co., Ltd.

The wind farm has Japan's largest wind power generation capacity of 30 MW with 14 units of 1.65 MW turbines and 5 units of 1.5 MW turbines.
Estimated annual power generation amounts to 58.97 GWh that can supply about 16,000 households with electricity.
Also, their power generation business performed by capitalization between Tomamae Town Administration and a private company gives suggestions to the future far larger scale wind power generating business.

Features of Equipment, Systems and Facilities
  • Japan's largest wind farm
The worldwide trend of wind power generation system is to larger capacity. The Wind Villa adopted the world's largest wind turbines (single unit output 1.65 MW and 1.5 MW) for commercial use. The total output is 30,000 kW. Installation of larger scaled system is aimed at more economic efficiency of wind power generation.

  • Application of wind characteristics simulation technology
Array of the wind turbines were determined based on various analysis and evaluations on wind characteristics influenced by the conditions of complicated landscape.

  • Specification of the wind farm
Total capacity of the wind farm : 30,600 kW
Capacity of wind turbine (type and control method) :

    • 1.65 MW × 14 turbines (induction turbine, pitch control)
    • 1.5 MW × 5 turbines (synchronous turbine, pitch control + variable speed control)
    • Total: 19 turbines
    • Tower height : 60 m
    • Blade diameter : 66 m

  • Co-existence with the stock farm
The station is located in the town managed stock farm in Tomamae Town.
The scenery is preserved by burying the power cables in the ground and installing transformers in the wind mill tower.
