300 kW PV Power Generation System Installed at Nippon Institute
of Technology
Winner
Nippon Institute of Technology
Space Concept Kabushiki Kaisya
Sharp Amenity System Corporation
This is a large-scale photovoltaic power generation system with solar
cell modules of 300 kW and a translucent type (for lighting) module
of 13.1 kW installed on the roof.
The large display in the main building shows various data including
present power generating status and information about photovoltaic
power generation.
Features of Equipment, Systems and Facilities
"300 kW water proofing PV system"
designed to blend in with the landscape
Japan's first and largest photovoltaic power generation system
was constructed at the university under an environmental program
to educate students who will be undertaking responsibilities for
the future preservation of the environment and to motivate visitors
and local residents about the importance of preserving the environment
for future generations.
The reconstruction of the main building foundation was carried
out with consideration for earthquake resistance and the power
generation system was installed.
The assembly of equipment covered most of the roof and
the integration of solar cell frames and metal roof material
was constructed to protect the equipment from the elements
instead of water proofing the old and obsolete roof.
Cost reduction and lightweight of materials realized economic
efficiency and attractive shape designed to blend in with
the landscape. In addition, curtailed power consumption
at a peak demand in the summer and heat insulation effects
of rooftop are gained as spillover effects.
Another 13.1 kW PV system "Solar Tube" - marriage
of lighting and power generation
This is the first installation of lighting type PV modules on
the roof and windows of the Japanese university. "Solar tube"
is constructed as a symbol of environmental projects. Visitors
can enter the inside of the solar tube and will see and experience
a photovoltaic power generation system.

Large information display for visitors and students
The display shows the operation status of the PV system in figures
and graphs in real time. An LCD touch monitor with a search function
enhances interest of visitors and students.
