Large-scale Co-generation System at Murano Water Treatment Plant
Winner
Osaka Prefectural Waterworks Service Corporation

This is a heat and power variable gas turbine cogeneration system which was introduced to Murano Water Treatment Plant in Osaka.
It has Japan's largest water supply capacity.
Exhaust heat from the gas turbine is used to dry sludge in deposition pool resulting in reduction of sludge transportation volume.

Features of Equipment, Systems and Facilities
  • Availability of an alternate power source during power failure in case of disaster, and high economic efficiency
Osaka Prefectural Waterworks Service Corporation with a capacity of 2,330,000 m3/day supplies clean water to 41 cities, towns and villages in Osaka.
Among the volume, Murano Water Treatment Plant has a capacity of 1,800,000 m3/day and with the newly installed co-generation system; Murano can supply about 500,000 m3 of water during power failure in case of disaster.
Different from the usual power generator for emergency, this system installs a regular generation system.
This results in economic efficiency with declined electricity charge and reduction of sludge treatment costs due to recycle use of exhaust heat.

  • Energy savings and environment protection
Exhaust heat (steam) from the gas turbines is used to dry sludge (river sludge). This reduces the amount and volume of the industrial waste by 30 - 40%. Further, extra exhaust heat (steam) is reused for power generation and use of the exhaust heat leads to saving energy.

  • New business form
The gas co-generation system was introduced to the Murano Water Treatment Plant which belongs to the Osaka Prefectural Waterworks Service Corporation. It functions as part of the water treatment process at Murano Plant, however, the introduction plan (financing, construction, and management) was managed by Osaka Prefectural Waterworks Service Corporation and it supplies power and heat to the Murano Plant.
