Photovoltaic Power Generation Systems Installed for Saitama Prefectural High Schools as Power Source for Emergency
Winner
Saitama Prefecture

Features of Equipment, Systems and Facilities

Saitama Prefecture has designated 38 out of 155 Prefectural High Schools as Emergency centers in the event of disasters, where 30 kW PV power generation and solar hot water supply systems are installed to secure life lines for 76,000 citizens in total (2,000 per center).
The facilities are normally used for meeting power and hot water demands in the schools, to save the operating cost.
  • PV Power Generation System
    Maximum output: 30 kW
    Total output: 30 k × 38 centers = 1,140 kW
    Battery capacity: 1,000 Ah × 24 centers = 24,000 Ah

  • Solar Hot Water Supply
Maximum concentration: 672 MJ (with 36 panels) or
    336 MJ (with 18 panels)
    Total heat collected: 672 MJ × 24 centers + 336 MJ × 14 centers
    = 20,632 MJ

  • Publicity to Citizens
Panels describing PV power generation system and output data are installed in the schools selected for emergency centers, to enhance citizens' awareness on new energy.
