New energy utilization at Misawa Homes Okayama Factory <Heat utilization of biomass waste and PV power generation system>

Misawa Techno Co., Ltd.
Misawa Homes Institute of Research and Development Co., Ltd.

Misawa Homes introduced a system for utilizing the heat from wood chips and shavings and sawdust emitted from the company’s prefabricated house manufacturing plant. The system automatically collects sawdust and woodchips for generating steam in the wood-chip boiler, which, through a heat-exchanger, provides 100% of the heat energy required to run the air-conditioning system in the 37,000 m² factory. A 14.4kW PV power generation system is installed on the roof of the factory, and it supplies almost 100% of the power for lighting in the factory offices. This system was highly rated for the environmental benefits of the air-conditioning system that utilizes biomass energy, and for its introduction in a large-scale factory.

Features of equipment, system and facilities

  Environmentally friendly recycled energy system
Under the Okayama Prefecture Environmental Basic Plan and Misawa Homes’ Environmental Declaration, Misawa Homes introduced a biomass thermal utilization system that achieved zero emission of wooden waste with the automatic collection of wood chips, shaving and sawdust, and thermal recycling of the company’s prefabricated house manufacturing plant, and a PV power generation system with a view to reducing commercial energy use, CO2 emission, and waste discharge. The system will achieve annual reductions of the equivalent of 114.6 kiloliters of heavy oil, or 343 t-c/year of CO2 emission.
