PV Power
generation system at Murano Water Treatment Plant
Osaka Waterworks Department,
Murano Water Treatment Plant
| Osaka Prefecture installed
a 360 kW PV power generation system at the Murano Water Treatment
Plant. This is the largest system installed by any local government
in Japan. The solar cell panels cover a vast area of 2,800 m²,
and have been installed over the plant’s sediment pond,
so by shading the light, they are also effective in controlling
the growth of algae. Wheels have been attached to the panel
frames so they can be easily moved by staff for cleaning the
pond. The system was highly rated for its scale, and its design
which is useful in controlling the growth of algae. |

Features of equipment,
system and facilities
|
Largest PV system installed by any local
water supply authority |
Rather than simply installing a shade cover
to control algae growth in the sediment pond (sloping panel type),
Murano Water Treatment Plant used the vast area of the pond to install
solar cell panels. This resulted in a large 360 kW PV power generation
system.
|
Use of the moveable solar cell frame |
When the panels were installed over the sediment
pond, wheels were attached to the panel frames so they could be
easily moved by staff carrying out maintenance work, such as cleaning
the bottom of the pond.

Educational effect: More than 10,000 people
visit Murano Water Treatment Plant in a year, and the plant tour
also takes in the PV power generation system. The plant’s
PR effort to promote itself as being an environmentally friendly
facility is also serving to educate people about the importance
of working to improve our environment. The plant is also expanding
its PR effort through its internet home page (only in Japanese).
