Features of Equipment, Systems and Facilities
Electric power for remote islands has been supplied by using small-scale diesel generators, in which power cost is relatively high. The commended system is installed in a remote island in Okinawa. It is a hybrid system composed of a 280 kW wind power generator and 5 units of diesel generator.
●Specifications
Wind power output 280 kW
Diesel output 5 units, 750 kW in total (Hateruma Island)
5 units, 1,050 kW in total (Tarama Island)
AC-DC converter 300 kW
Battery capacity 400 kWh (Hateruma Island)
  600 kWh (Tarama Island)
Control Functions
  • Diesel generator is controlled to automatically turn on/off depending upon wind power output.
  • Storage battery for leveling wind power output, compensating power output in response to abrupt changes in wind power and discharge control for peak demands.
  • Frequency variation within ± 0.3 Hz, when operating the wind turbine.
  • Voltage control by AC/DC converter (power factor control)

Wind turbine (280 kW)
